Why are we called the Knights?
We were founded in 1956 by Bill Hager. He played for Army at West Point so he called us The Knights. West Point's mascot is The Black Knights. Every game Bill coached, he wore a black & gold tie, starched white button down shirt and a leather Letterman jacket. At the age of 81, Bill was honored by the Knights for his contribution to football in Palo Alto. Bill was invited to call all the plays for The Knights on this game day. From 1991 until 1996, the Palo Alto Knights did not win one game for any team in any division! Although there was a fleeting moment of success 1996, the program Mike Piha inherited from Jeff Loveless in 1998 was done. There were two teams left, money owed to five vendors, bad equipment and an inexperience coaching staff. Both teams were 0-8, and Loveless walked away from the program as it was folding. Piha raised $25,000 to get it going again and salvaged the remaining two teams. By 1999, The Knights won the league title with the Junior Pee Wees, and went to the first National Championship in Knights history. The rest is what you have seen! Since then the Palo Alto Knights have competed at the highest levels of youth football. We have had teams at the National Championships in Florida for the past ten years. Why are we called The Knights?
